About NSAHelper
The federal No Surprises Act (42 U.S.C. § 300gg-111 et seq.), in effect since January 1, 2022, prohibits balance billing in most emergency situations and for many out-of-network providers at in-network facilities. Five states layer their own surprise-billing statutes on top.
NSAHelper is a free, open-source utility that drafts three formal letters — to your provider, to your insurer, and to CMS — citing the federal NSA and any applicable state statute. If you want to escalate, NSAHelper also drafts an IDR escalation cover letter.
